Talha Ilyas Sheikh is a UK qualified Barrister, Arbitrator, and Mediator. He obtained his LLB (Hons) from the University of London in 2014 and pursued his Bar at Law in the UK at a top-ranked provider. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales at the Honourable Society of Lincoln‘s Inn on July 28, 2016.
After returning to Pakistan, Talha joined the 40-year-old law firm SLA - Sheikh Law Associates, where he serves as the managing partner. The firm was founded by Muhammad Ilyas Sheikh and Hafiz Muhammad Idris, top advocates at the Supreme Court of the country, specializing in Civil, Tax, Real Estate, Construction, Commercial, and Constitutional matters, among others.
Inheriting a passion for litigation, Talha has broadened his legal horizon to encompass Constitutional Law, Intellectual Property, and Arbitration, among others. His mastery in transactional work is notable, providing agreements crafted with the foresight of their ultimate judicial use. Talha‘s role in high-profile cases, notably in the Islamabad and Lahore High Courts and arbitrations involving the Dubai International Finance Centre (DIFC), showcases his capability to handle complex legal challenges. A landmark moment in his career was the overturning of a multi-million arbitration award in a reported case (2019 MLD 1178), showcasing his prowess in arbitration. His significant contribution to intellectual property law came with a pivotal ruling in the case referenced as 2023 CLD 1, which decisively clarified the jurisdiction of the Intellectual Property Tribunal, Islamabad, thereby streamlining the enforcement of Intellectual Property Laws in Pakistan.
Beyond litigation, Talha is a guiding force in promoting ADR through seminars and advocacy, emphasizing its advantages and utility in the Pakistani legal framework. His leadership extends to moderating panels at seminars and steering a vibrant team of young barristers and lawyers towards innovative legal solutions. Talha demystifies ADR as a complementary facet of legal practice, rather than a replacement for traditional litigation. He has also been regularly appointed as a mediator by the High Courts.
Talha‘s commitment to legal reform is evident in his efforts to introduce a comprehensive Bar Vocational Course at the Lawyers‘ Academy within the High Court Bar Association of Rawalpindi, advocating for the training of locally qualified barristers. A fervent believer in the Rule of Law as a cornerstone for national upliftment, Talha works tirelessly with the judiciary to alleviate the case backlog and improve the quality of justice delivery through ADR methods. He is leading the Pakistan Mediation Movement, aimed at promoting mediation practices across the country.
At his core, Talha believes in continuous learning, self-growth, and the transformative power of serving humanity by striving to be the best version of oneself. His progressive approach and unwavering dedication to the legal profession not only set a benchmark for excellence but also inspire a new generation of legal practitioners in Pakistan.
